Benefits of TMS

Safer

The safety profile of TMS Therapy is one of its major advantages. As a non-invasive neurostimulation technique, it requires no pharmacological intervention. Instead, it harnesses natural electromagnetic waves to target the outer part of the brain (cortex). Thus, TMS activates various regulatory processes and connections between brain regions. In some ways, it is similar to an MRI but uses much less intense magnetism. There are very few contraindications to TMS Therapy and it is generally very well tolerated, with only a small percentage of patients who choose to discontinue treatment.

Convenient

Because our TMS Therapy sessions can be conducted quickly on an outpatient basis, they are easily organised to fit into a patient’s schedule. Sessions can be completed in one of our many clinics, at the location that is most convenient to you.

Furthermore, unlike some medications and other neurostimulation techniques, patients are free to go about their daily routines right after receiving treatment. Although TMS Therapy does not affect your ability to drive, some patients can find the stimulation treatments a little tiring. Take care if you decide to drive to and from the session.

Effective

TMS Therapy has demonstrated its effectiveness in the treatment of depression, OCD, PTSD, pain management, rehabilitation medicine and other conditions. The results of TMS Therapy can vary and a patient’s remission may be sustained over long periods with or without medications.

Our team at Modalis are committed to ongoing research and review of our treatment protocols according to the emerging evidence and the most current neurophysiology knowledge to provide the highest level of care. As part of this, we provide regular updates about the latest developments and published research in this area.

Drug Free

TMS therapy does not require any pharmacological intervention (i.e. no medications are required). It can be combined with other multidisciplinary interventions. TMS Therapy is an alternative treatment method for a range of patients who show an inadequate response to standard therapies, which can frequently involve complex medication regimes. In Psychiatry, this condition is commonly referred to as ‘treatment-resistant”, i.e. treatment-resistant depression. Other disciplines of medicine (such as pain management and tinnitus) present similar clinical challenges.

In the case of depression, unlike other treatments such as Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT), TMS Therapy does not require hospitalization or anaesthesia, and entails no memory loss.
